In the technological-optimism scenario, success belongs to those who create great value in collaboration with AI and, amid widespread material abundance, possess meaning, relationships, and the ability to pose creative questions. In the stagnation scenario, technology's benefits are limited and growth is slow, so people with solid expertise, trustworthy relationships, good health, and the ability to live richly with few resources are respected. In the fragmentation scenario, technology and wealth are unevenly distributed, and success is found in those who protect communities, bridge divides, and possess resilience. Traits common to all scenarios: a habit of continuous learning and adaptability; relationships built on accumulated trust; physical and mental health; autonomy grounded in one's own definition of success rather than external standards; and a felt sense of contributing to others and society. Actions for today: fix weekly learning time, invest in a few deep relationships, prioritize sleep and exercise, diversify income and assets, and articulate and periodically revisit your values.
Scenario planning, systematized by Shell in the 1970s, aims to describe multiple futures rather than a single forecast and identify strategies that work across them. The view that the definition of success shifts by scenario treats success not as a fixed destination but as something determined in relation to the environment. Viktor Frankl's 'will to meaning' in 'Man's Search for Meaning', and the autonomy, competence, and relatedness of Deci and Ryan's self-determination theory, are elements that support human well-being in any social environment and thus form a cross-scenario foundation for success. Nassim Taleb's concept of antifragility highlights the importance of structures that benefit from volatility, such as diversification, slack, and optionality, giving theoretical grounding to preparation that works whichever scenario unfolds.
Cross-scenario traits are highly abstract and hard to translate directly into daily choices such as which job to take or where to live. The act of drawing scenarios is itself bound by present-day values, so elements that truly matter in 2040 may be overlooked. Investments in health and relationships show results slowly and are easily crowded out by short-term pressures.
Once a year, write out your own three scenarios, check where your current life and work would be weakest in each, and commit to one action for the coming year. Convert abstract traits into measurable indicators such as hours per week, with whom, and how much, so you can track them. Sharing your scenarios with trusted friends or colleagues and asking them to point out blind spots also helps.
