Human capital is the present value of an individual's future earnings, built from knowledge, skills, health, networks, and reputation. Financial capital is accumulated wealth such as deposits, equities, and property. In one's twenties, human capital dominates total wealth and financial capital is tiny; with age, human capital shrinks as remaining working years decline while financial capital accumulates, and the ratio reverses. From this view, the highest-return investment for a twenty-something is self-investment that raises earning power: education, skills, health, and relationships. At the same time, because a large stock of human capital behaves like a stable bond, a small financial portfolio can be equity-heavy without making total wealth very risky, and there is time to recover from mistakes. In one's fifties, human capital is declining and financial capital is the main asset, so preserving it and converting it into income (raising bond allocation, planning withdrawals) matters most. Self-investment does not become pointless, however: maintaining health and refreshing expertise to work longer is the most effective way to extend the life of human capital.
The concept of human capital was formalized by economists including Gary Becker, and lifecycle asset-allocation theory by Zvi Bodie, Robert Merton, and Paul Samuelson argued that human capital should be treated as part of one's implicit portfolio. In this framework, the human capital of someone with stable earnings resembles a bond, while that of someone whose income tracks the economy or stock market (finance professionals, entrepreneurs, commission-based salespeople) resembles equity. Consequently, the appropriate financial allocation differs by occupation even at the same age. Self-investment deserves priority when young because the payback period is long and income gains accumulate across a lifetime much like compounding. Ian Ayres and Barry Nalebuff's Lifecycle Investing pushed the logic further, arguing that young investors' equity allocations can be very high (though their recommendation of leverage drew criticism). After fifty, the shrinking remaining span of human capital leaves less room to recover large financial losses through work, which is the theoretical basis for the general rule of reducing risk with age.
Human capital is hard to measure and can vanish faster than expected through industry decline, AI substitution, or loss of health. The 'young people can take risk' logic tends to underestimate the worst case in which job loss or illness coincides with a market crash. The point that people in their fifties should keep renewing human capital is correct, but age discrimination and unequal access to reskilling are real barriers. The theory also insufficiently reflects differences in occupation and national social protection.
Judge whether your human capital is 'bond-like' or 'equity-like' from the volatility of your occupation's income, and set financial allocations for total wealth accordingly; equity-like earners should hold less equity in their portfolios. Young people should pair self-investment with insurance and an emergency fund against the loss of human capital. From the fifties onward, treat health investment and skill renewal as ways to extend human capital, and build a transition plan that gradually shifts reliance toward financial capital while adjusting how you work.
