Eat the frog" means doing the day's most important and most tempting-to-postpone task first thing in the morning. Mornings offer more decision capacity and fewer interruptions, so the best state of mind goes to the most valuable work. Three criteria identify the frog: (1) completing it has the largest effect on your goals or evaluation, (2) thinking about it makes you feel heavy, and (3) you have been postponing it by your own choice rather than someone else's deadline. For tomorrow, that would be drafting the price-increase negotiation email to a client. The night before, create a draft with only the recipient and subject filled in, place the relevant past quotes on the desktop, block the first sixty minutes on the calendar as reserved, and set chat notifications to stay off until ten. In the morning, all that remains is to begin.
Brian Tracy's Eat That Frog! applies the Pareto principle to a single day: a few important tasks produce most of the results, so they should be done first. Preparing the night before applies Clear's laws "make it obvious" and "make it easy" and Gollwitzer's implementation intentions, which pre-link the morning situation to the action. Removing the barriers to starting the night before lets limited morning willpower go to execution rather than to deciding whether to start. Including "feels heavy" in the criteria reflects Pychyl's finding that procrastination is emotional avoidance, so the strength of resistance often proxies for importance. Criterion (1) remains primary, however; tasks that are merely unpleasant but unimportant do not qualify.
Hunting for a frog every day can itself become a burden, producing guilt on days with no frog or inventing unpleasant tasks for their own sake. In workplaces where a manager's urgent request lands first thing, prepared frogs go uneaten day after day and faith in the principle erodes.
Set frogs for three fixed weekdays rather than every day, and run normal plans on the others. Where morning interruptions are common, agree with the manager that 9 to 10 is focus time and urgent items come after 10; if that is impossible, reserve 45 minutes at home or in a cafe before arriving at the office as frog time.
